Finally, we have to complete our first test of the famous Yamaha MT-09! And the least we can say is that the (long) wait was worth it. On a completely new technology base, Yamaha returns to the front of the stage with great effect, especially a three-cylinder engine that has not finished to be heard. First MT09 test inside!
Warning, this new Yamaha 2014 which has upset the market. The MT-09 is certainly that all the showrooms waiting: Finally a “real” new bike that will offer them the best and most days, offering riders a unique cocktail, explosive … and used almost everywhere and all the time new 3-cylinder engine, new chassis philosophy ultimately very studied. The MT-09 made a big splash on the scene versatile and general public, the character premium motorcycles! Here is why.
When the Function Dictates Another Form
Most roadsters, more or less energetic, the average superior engine capacity (600 cm3), are all about the same line, an aggressive front and rear often very tough to return the favor. Instead, the new Yamaha MT-09 is already distinguished by its more slender lines and a minimalist if it is to ask whether the engineers have not forgotten parts along the way, such as trim around meter. Special a priori, as the ergonomics of the Yamaha MT-09 also unique with its perched high handlebars, low seat height, making more like a trail than a roadster, a first visual impression is confirmed once aboard.

The footrests are positioned back and low enough to unfold the legs means jigs, but bikers than 1.85 m will be probably a little more crowded this perspective aboard the MT-09.
Taking Obvious Hands

From the first meters, exacerbated lightness of the Yamaha MT-09 added to his natural ergonomics, greatly facilitate its management hands. While the bike steers well, but some are better medium displacement. Also, gear selection is good … for Yamaha, we’ve seen boxes softer speeds elsewhere.

At the time of the first test of the Yamaha MT-09, the general philosophy of the builder shines through every detail and sensation: the MT-09 and its three-cylinder engine is easier to understand a furious MV Agusta Brutale 800 eg. But from the first rotation of the electronic throttle control (ride-by-wire), the ultra generous torque (8.3 daN or 8.9 mkg) already demonstrates its full force! And this is one of the outstanding qualities of this new Yamaha MT-09: a very demonstrative response at low and midrange, it ensures the guns again, not to say record in the category. Honestly, the sensations offered between 2500 rev / min and 5000 r / min approaching the MT-09 Triumph Speed Triple 1050, no less! And from the outset, this is what exuberant character of the new three-cylinder engine that Yamaha brand spirits.
Ultra-torque, this engine is very smooth and flexible, since it is possible to go to sixth 1500 rev / min and then again on the same report with remarkable vigor, worthy (45 km / h approx.) – The less sensations but we check chrono hands and engine bench – a larger capacity. In addition, “screwing the handle” there thereafter sufficient longer block MT-09, which spent 5 500 r / min leads his crew with effective linearity to the end of its useful range plan. While some three-cylinder competitors are more explosive on top, Yamaha has chosen to further boost the low and medium engine speeds, which undoubtedly shows more relevant in the context of everyday use. With the Yamaha MT-09, there is the pleasure of being surprised by a truly unique character driven, as the first Triumph Street Triple 675 at its output, but in a body for the Japanese version of buildée. However, during the first 50 kilometers, we encountered difficulties in maintaining a net gas, which generated a sensitive shot. The ride pace suffered somewhat and change mapping mode (standard, A or B) did not change almost nothing. The side chains of transmission were, it is true, very tense and the throttle had no game later with the miles, the phenomenon became less sensitive.
Flexible Suspension, Agility and Optimized Assumed
Similarly, braking also seemed too brutal entry lever with a fork dive a little abrupt in the city or between turns for example. But more than these minor flaws – not to mention trifles – it’s mostly random adhesion Croatian roads that will give us a hard time. The first few kilometers, the evasions of the rear wheel brought more heat to driver 30 ° ambient … Fortunately, some portions of bitumen more consistent with our French standards have enabled us to force the pace as expected. And under these conditions, the Yamaha MT-09 reveals, once again, a singular character.
Agile, the bike actually plays small curves. The control handle is at a feast, the MT-09 is placed very easily when cornering at normal speeds. Then praise the work done by the manufacturer to lower the center of gravity (tilted and lowered engine, frame designed for this purpose). Ergonomics, halfway between roadster and trail, gives nevertheless not want to drive the new Yamaha Supermoto way with leg out … In addition, the saddle, wide on the rear and a slight incline, do not make things easier when you want to step back to a more athletic posture, it is also the case of the KTM 690 Duke on which we must operate online. Further rapprochement with the Austrian, the suspension travel and flexibility early in the race. So they bring a real comfort on small bumps, a real plus on bumpy roads where the bike so will keep pace safely.
Unprecedented Versatility in the Three-Cylinder
Of course, in the rare fast, twisty and well coated portions, we found some moves on the big support. Triumph Street Triple 675 seems to us, in the spirit, the more rigid and stable (to be confirmed by comparison) that Yamaha MT-09. This behavior can also be of a more general attitude switched to the back of the Japanese, who “did sit” more as soon as it picks up speed.
The fact remains that this testing ground (dream) between mountain villages crossed pitch, damaged roads and seaside dotted with large curves, the Yamaha MT-09 reveals many talents. Its overall comfort – saddle, ergonomics, suspensions – have saved us the usual aches on the 300 km road traveled for the first test. Under these conditions, the bike has never shown against type, allowing either a walk pace through an engine that can stay all the time in the sixth and a region of 190 km before reserve autonomy, rapid wound / rhythm with high agility and good connections to the ground, possibly a dose of fun with his amazing penchant for rear wheels … With the MT-09, Yamaha offers us a real motorcycle “multi card”, and whose oriented “platform” design facilitate begat future versions (two variants based on MT-09 are scheduled for next year) .
Balance test MT-09 Yamaha is finally back with a strong concept
Hard not to get excited about the end of the first road test of the Yamaha MT-09, 2014, which raises many doubts and says here an impressive potential. On an entirely new basis, the manufacturer serves up a 3-cylinder full of character and amenity, an agile chassis, easy to understand and with a more comfortable and versatile than many potentially competing roadsters geometry.
